Are female skaters discriminated against?
Hi all,
I am doing a project in my Youth Cultures class on female participation in skateboarding. My main focus on how females feel they are treated within the subculture. If anyone could respond it would be very helpful! Thanks!
Do you feel discriminated against as a female skater in a male-dominated subculture? Do you feel that males underestimate your ability or find you less attractive because you skateboard?
These are just some questions but any answers relating to this topic are much appreciated!

Frequently some dudes say things like ‘don’t have the same force’ or ‘can never skate the same level as men’ but, we have the same passion and that’s what makes us as good as them…So, girls can shred just as hard as boys can.

LikeDislikeThe short answer is: yes, female skaters are discriminated against – whether its with condescending remarks at skateparks or by companies not running female events.
But the long answer is that thankfully it is decreasing. The womens skate scene is growing all the time, the top riders are continuously pushing the technical boundaries and there are more and more great companies out there that are supporting the scene by providing sponsorship, events and promotion. You’ve only got to look at the daily news here on SkaterGirl to realise there’s a whole lot going on.
