Noob..please help with board choice

I’m 30..5’10″..145lbs..& am wanting to learn to skate. I’ve never skated before, & in talking with friends, they said the best beginners board is a longboard. Is this true? If so, I’ve got the Sector 9 Cloud 9 in mind…would that be a good beginner board? Does it matter if its a longboard or can it be a street board? Any help/suggestions would be super appreciated!

My name is Frida Marie, I’m a postgrad photography student living in London. I’m working on a photo project about London skater girls. I am interested in meeting up with skaters and document their skating and interview them. If you are interested in being a part of the project or might know some one who might be, please feel free to get in touch

The focus in the project is to show the sport from a female point of view and to celebrate the love the skaters have for the sport.

“so when i was younger i wanted to skate really bad and hang out with my brother but when i asked him one time he just flat out shut me down. now i’m 20 he’s 26 and i started skateboarding again and this time around 12 years later he’s cool with it i’m disappointed because i didn’t see through his bullshit and put myself down as not ever being cool enough or good enough and sort of gave up skateboarding i got really discouraged so for all the ladies out there that who are doing it stay strong if i could i would go back, be stronger, encourage myself and never let anyone get me down”
