Poppy Olsen wins Hurley Australian Bowl-riding Championships

Australia had its first national bowl rider event on the weekend held in Newcastle, about two hours north of Sydney. The city of Newcastle bucked up about a year ago to install a world class massive bowl (after years of effort by the local skate community fighting the local establishment) and thus, prompted and supported by the World Cup Skate guys, our first local national bowl-rider event shot off – The Hurley Australian Bowl-Riding Championships. Great time, and great shredding with the best skaters from around the country. The final snake by the pros in the dying minutes of their division was crazy. The good news for the girls was that in their division Poppy Olsen (11) took out the title beating out her competitors whose average age was about 20.

At one point I sat beside Pat Noho, who came over from Venice CA and a regular face at the Masters division of Bondi Bowlarama. He commented that the bowl was truly world class. Finally. Maybe this country will wake up.

Thanks to Andrew for sending us the words and photos.
